Mexican American Grandmother, 70, Mistaken for Asian, Beaten and Dragged Across LA Bus

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) has recently arrested a woman who allegedly attacked a 70-year-old Mexican American grandmother on a bus after thinking she was Asian.

The attack: The grandmother, solely identified as Becky, was about to get off the 81 Metro bus at La Loma Road and Figueroa Street on April 9, The East Sider reported.

  • According to Becky's son, Pete, a Black woman aged 25 to 30 hurled anti-Asian slurs at his mother before attacking her and dragging her to the front of the bus.

  • None of the other passengers — not even the driver — helped Becky, Pete claimed. The assault stopped once one of the passengers called 911.

  • Becky and her family are of Hispanic descent but are often mistaken for Asian. They are longtime residents of Highland Park, one of the first subdivisions of Los Angeles.

The aftermath: Photos taken after the attack show her broken nose as well as deep bruises on her face and neck. Some of her hair and skin were ripped from her scalp.

  • Becky, who was taken to the hospital and released after 24 hours, suffers from preexisting conditions such as lupus arthritis.

  • The bruises on her legs and her other injuries make it difficult for her to walk, according to Pete.

  • LAPD officers found and arrested Yasmine Beasley, 23, for battery around 1:30 p.m. soon after, according to KTLA 5.

  • The incident is under investigation and her bail was set at $50,000.
