Since it nearly exist I use Peco Nscale code 55 track; Peco offer a great line of turnouts, crossing, and double slip.

All of them are handsome good trackwork and work quite well.

However after some years of use, they show some electrical problems, in fact electrical continuity trough the point; this is true on turnouts because of the hinged point which whith time take play and make false contacts.

I modify since years all of my Peco turnouts whith this method and they are become nearly electrical bullet proof.

I'm inspired first by Tillig and second by Fastrack electrical philosophy which use non hinged point.

However today I didn't use Peco turnouts anymore but handbuild whith Fastrack Jigs and I mix them whith some Peco track.

I just needed a double crossover so I modified it as usual, it's the same method on a usual turnout.

First, I solder by the bottom the hinged point, the point are blocked in a middle position and I use a slightly silver loaded solder to obtain a strong sodered point. See red arrows.

I also solder jumper between the rail point and their sister rail. See red arrows

Now there is a full  electrical continuity between the rail and the point, the frog need to be isolated; I use a jeweler saw to cut the rails and isolate the frog  (a la Fastrack). The blauw circle show the original Peco cuts, the red arrows mine ( on a conventional turnout I make a second cut just a few ties after the point of the frog)

Peco use a jumper for the electrical continuity of their frog, I cut this jumper and solder a wire on it to have a frog electricaly isolated which will go on the Tortoise contacts.

Because I use Tortoise, I don't need the Peco spring and for a more cosmetic view I cut away the spring box ,part of the trowbar ad the plastic tabs for the Peco solenoid. I will put some new ties to hide the holes.

I've been having problems with all of my Peco insulfrog code 80 turnouts since I isolated the frogs from the diverging and mainline rails behind the turnout as I've seen mentioned in various places to avoid short circuits with DCC. I can never get a consistent contact of the point rails with the stock rails even after cleaning them and trying to bend the points for better contact. 

So I have started to solder the gaps closed again and will coat the frog rails where they almost touch with epoxy to guard against shorts. At least this way the points are powered from the feeders behind the turnout and don't rely on the point to stock rail contact anymore.
