Slovensky Kopov

The Slovenský Kopov, a small to medium-sized hunting dog that is black and tan in color, has been used for many years by Slovakian natives – though rarely seen elsewhere. Even though it may look similar on the outside to an American Black and Tan Coonhound, this breed’s body type is more sturdy with its size being smaller than its counterpart.

For centuries, the Slovenský Kopov has been a prized scent hound within its native Central Europe for boar hunting. Although records are few and far between, it is believed to have descended from other breeds such as the Brandlbracke (Austrian Black and Tan Coonhound) and Ogar Polski (Polish Hound). With an illustrious past of successful game tracking behind them, these remarkable dogs remain invaluable assets to hunters across the region today.

The Slovenský Kopov is an intrepid hunter, courageous when it comes to its pursuits of feral hogs and deer. They are incredibly adept at tracking a scent until the animals has been found, which requires tenacity on their part. Although they are independent creatures that prefer minimal human contact, these dogs remain obedient when commanded by their master or guide. With the right level of dedication and courage behind them, the Slovenský Kopov can be extremely successful in its hunting endeavors!

To uphold the Slovenský Kopov’s desired capacity and temperament, consistent training starting from puppyhood is paramount. Furthermore, it is crucial to expose them to socialization with humans and other animals early on; otherwise they may develop trust issues which can make them become defensive.

Perfectly suited for outdoor, rural lifestyles, the Slovenský Kopov loves to hunt and scent trail regularly. If kept indoors with minimal activity they may become depressed or begin destructive behavior. Don’t be fooled though; these dogs have been known to thrive in apartments as well if given enough exercise! For optimal happiness, however, it’s best that your pup has a wide fenced-in area outdoors where they can safely explore and get their daily dose of fresh air.

The Slovenský Kopov’s short coat makes for easy grooming, but a weekly brush is still recommended to keep the fur healthy. While its undercoat may be thick and shed seasonally, brushing during these times needs to be done more often. For those that use this breed for hunting purposes, it is essential to carefully inspect their fur, paws and ears after each excursion to ensure they are free of debris or brambles.
