This Prairie Gentian or Texas Bluebells usually is a perennial, but can be a biennial or even an annual in some situations. The old generic name was Lisianthus, and in recent times this good cut flower has been used a lot in the florist industry. It is know to easily last for 3 weeks with the stems in water. The new generic name of Eustoma from Greek means "good mouth." The mother variety and species is native from Nebraska to southeast Wyoming to Texas and Mexico, growing in moist soils usually near streams and creeks. This cultivar has purple double flowers. It seems to be the Japanese who really liked this flower to produce various cultivars with blue, purple, pink, white, or yellow flowers; single or double.
