Abstract

Recurrent ulcers on the tongue surface are common among adults. History taking provides valuable information on patient’s general and specific symptoms as well as relevant background of potential underlying medical diseases that could be linked to the occurrence of oral ulcers. Clinical characteristics of the ulcers must be recognised and these include its shape, size, site, number, borders, base of ulcer, and its surrounding tissue. In anemic patients, a comprehensive blood investigation is essential for the diagnosis of specific underlying haematological disorders leading to recurrent oral ulcers. Management can be focused on symptomatic relief for the ulcers and specific intervention to treat the cause leading to the haematological condi tion.
