The great blue lobelia (sometimes called the blue cardinal flower) is a perennial wildflower with azure and lavender-hued blossoms that cluster around an upper stem. This member of the bellflower family has a tubular shape that attracts bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies which serve as pollinators as they feed on the sweet nectar.

The blue lobelia (Lobelia siphilitica) grows 2 to 3 feet tall and wildflowers bloom in late summer and early autumn (July-Oct). It can be distinguished from the cardinal flower by its rare color and serrated leaves. The blue lobelia is native to the Midwest and eastern United States, requiring moist or wet soil, and prefers full sun to partial sun conditions. Herbivores avoid eating the plant due to its having a mild poison; it is considered a short-lived perennial, living between 2 and 4 years.
