What is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a common chronic inflammatory skin condition that looks like a rash with red patches and flaking skin.

Psoriasis affects nearly 8 million Americans. It can develop at any age, on any area of the body – though it’s most commonly found on the hands, elbows, knees, and scalp.

Even though this non-contagious autoimmune disease has been studied for decades, the exact cause is not known. However, we do know that things like stress, sunburns, medications, allergies, diet, and environmental factors can trigger a psoriasis flare up.

The Challenge with Psoriasis?

In the 1990’s pharmaceutical companies developed medications that claimed to cure(?) psoriasis, which left thousands of people frustrated with short-term (or no) results.

Since psoriasis is a lifelong condition that can only be treated and not cured, many people are left frustrated when a particular medication or procedure doesn’t last. Add in different biological needs, and psoriasis can feel completely unmanageable.

At Dr. Yeoman’s Dermatology Office, we treat psoriasis with ongoing, patient-specific remedies. Regular and appropriate maintenance is the only way to feel confident in your skin again.

How Do I Know if it’s Psoriasis?

Psoriasis often gets confused with eczema, hives, and dry skin. Here’s how to spot the differences.

Psoriasis

  • Red, itchy, dry skin
  • Silvery-white scales and sometimes raised edges
  • Thicker skin where rash exists
  • Joint pain, swelling or stiffness
  • Thick or ridged nails
  • Lesions on the elbows, knees, scalp, chest and lower back
  • Treatment is patient-specific and ongoing

Eczema

  • Red, itchy, dry skin
  • Swelling
  • Oozing skin
  • No joint pain
  • Skin is not as thick as it is with psoriasis
  • Treatment is patient-specific and ongoing

Hives

  • Red, itchy, dry skin
  • Red raised bumps or welts
  • Blotchy, red skin
  • Temporary
  • Can be treated with antihistamines

Dry Skin

  • Red, itchy, dry skin
  • White flaky skin
  • Temporary
  • Can be treated with moisturizer and hydration

Patients often describe psoriasis like this:

“I’m always trying to cover up my arms and legs even in the summer. The sun irritates my skin and I don’t like when people stare.”
“I keep itching but it’s like the itch is never scratched!”
“I feel like a fish all covered in scales.”
“Sometimes the rash oozes out puss or some kind of liquid, which gets on my clothes. It’s really frustrating.”
“I can’t stand the smell of my psoriasis when it leaks…I really feel like I can’t leave my home because it’s so embarrassing.”
“My psoriasis is on my mind all of the time…I can’t escape the feeling that people are always looking at me and making fun of me.”
Thankfully, you can manage this painful and frustrating condition.

Treatments for Psoriasis

Topical Therapies

The consistent application of topical solutions is an effective way to address psoriasis flare ups. This treatments come in the form of ointments, lotions, foams, sprays, or creams, and are used to soothe the area in question. Our team will work with patients to test different forms of topical treatments to see what works best.

Medication

Medications to treat psoriasis have come a long way since the 1990s, and can minimize outbreaks with appropriate use. The FDA’s approval of oral drug use to address psoriasis has led to a variety of options that reduce inflammation, and thus the physical appearance of the condition. Medication is often used in combination with topical therapies.

Biologics

Biologics are protein-based drugs made from living cells. They’re a newer treatment for psoriasis and are often used when other treatments prove ineffective. Biologics are administered via injection or intravenous (IV) infusion and alleviate psoriasis symptoms and frequency of outbreaks. This solution is not suitable for patients with weak immune systems.
Our dermatology team will recommend a treatment regimen based on the severity and frequency of your psoriasis, your medical history, and the use of other medications. We take a holistic approach that evolves with you as your needs and conditions change over time.
