Have you ever gotten a haircut that looked fabulous on someone else but turned out to be disastrous for you? The success of your haircut depends on whether you’ve found the right hairstyle for your face shape. There are around 9 types of common face shapes – heart, square, pear, rectangle, round, oval, diamond, triangle and oblong. And each of these can look a whole lot more aesthetically pleasing when complemented with the right hairstyle. You’ll notice the difference instantly, and in some cases, the difference might even make you almost unrecognisable – we mean that in the best way.

How to determine your face shape?

To begin with, you need to know what shape your face really is. One way of doing this is by asking your hairdresser. If you want to determine it yourself, grab a measuring tape and stand in front of the mirror. Measure different elements of your face, like your forehead and jawline, and note the numbers down. After a while, you’ll begin to see the results. For example, if your face is longer than its width, you may have an oblong or rectangular face shape.

We spoke to celebrity hairstylist Savio John Pereira to get you the best hairstyles for your particular face shape. Here’s all the expert-proof information you need before you hit the salon for your next transformation.

1. Heart shape

Most suited hairstyles: Textured fringe, dimensional quiff

For a heart shaped face, it is important to remember to not make your chin look too narrow. You need to balance out the top part of your face with the bottom. Textured fringe hairstyles and dimensional quiffs work best for face shape. A fringe hairstyle brings more volume on the top, making your face look fuller. The dimensional quiff draws emphasis on the top of your head with more volume and sleeker sides, or shorter hair on the sides and back. This highlights your face structure while making sure it does not look too narrow.

2. Square shape

Most suited hairstyles: undercuts, quiffs and deep side parts

Men with square shaped faces usually have a strong jawline. You can opt for undercuts, quiffs and deep side parts which will enhance this facial feature. With undercuts, the side of your hair will be buzzed short, but the top will be kept much longer. Quiffs have longer hair on the top and shorter hair on the sides and for this hairdo, styling is key to bring out more texture in the hair.

3. Pear Shape

Most suited hairstyles: Pretty much everything

If you have a pear shaped face, you’re in luck. Hairstyles ranging from buzzed haircuts to mid length textured layers work very well. Different hair textures also work on these faces. You can play around with hair textures as well as hair length, as there are no real don’ts for this face shape.

4. Rectangle Shape

Most suited hairstyles: A side part with a slicked back hairstyle

Since you already have a long face, you have to ensure that you don’t make it seem longer. Keep the hairstyle balanced on all sides without too much distinction between the top and the sides. A side part with a slicked back hairstyle work best for rectangle shaped faces. Keep the styling neat without any volume on the top.

5. Round shape

Most suited hairstyles: Pompadour

A round face is missing angles – and that’s what you need to create to elongate your face. For this shape, pompadours will create more dimension. Here, the long hair in the front can be shaped in multiple ways, thereby adding angles to the face.

6. Oval shape

This is a relatively versatile face shape. Most hairstyles such as quiffs, voluminous pompadours and shoulder length hairstyles go well with an oval shaped face.

7. Diamond shape

Most suited hairstyles: Textured or angular fringes

Men with this face shape have a wider jawline, and hairstyles such as textured or angular fringes help balance it out with the forehead. This look has longer hair on the top but, which is allowed to fall over your forehead. The sides are slightly shorter than the top, in order to highlight your best facial features.

8. Triangle shape

Most suited hairstyles: Long hairstyles, quiffs, pompadour and faux hawks

If you have a triangle shaped face, you probably have a wider jaw and a narrow forehead – and the trick is to balance it out. Long hairstyles, quiffs, pompadour and faux hawks will work very well for you. The faux hawk hairstyle also goes spectacularly well with beards, in case you’re a fan of facial hair.

9. Oblong shape

Most suited hairstyles: Mid length round textured layers

For this face shape, you need a hairstyle that helps create an illusion through the hair on your nape so as to make your face look shorter. Mid length round textured layers work to cut the length from your face. Avoid quiff and long length spikes, because they elongate the face even further.
