NUMBER TU669036 LEISTRITZ REFERENCE: SC- 10386 SERIAL NUMBER: 66407.001-006 68196.001-002, 007 LEISTRITZ CORPORATION 165 Chestnut Street Alledale, NJ 07401 Phone: (201) 934-8262 Order Date: 6/29/99 Fax: (201) 934-8262 Leistritz General Description 1, WORKING PRINCIPLE: ; ' ‘The LS type pumps are self-priming positive displacement rotary ‘sorew. pumps used for pumping lubricating fluids. The L8 pump has three rotors working as conveying elements. The double threaded power rotor meshes closely with two double threaded Idler rotors. This rotor aokage runs in a surrounding housing which encloses:and seals around the three rotors. Due to the specially designed thread profile, separate tight cavities between the rotors and between the rotors and the housing are formed, When rotating, the fluld trapped In the cavities moves: continuously, without shear or agitation, axially from the inlet to discharge side of the pumps. The rotor geometry is chosen so that no axial thrust is brought to the ball bearing which is there simply to keep the rotor package in place. All radial loads are equally distributed to the surrounding housing which serves merely as a sleeve bearing, i Depending on pressure and viscosity the size of the clearance between the balance piston of the Idlers and of the power rotor will vary. ‘This clearance, which is sell-adjusting, guarantees the hydro-dynamic balance of the rotors and provides lubrication for the bearing and the seal. ‘The area around the bearing and the seal is a low pressure area connected to the suction side of the pump by a gun-deil in the housing. Depending upon the application, the pump is available with an internal bearing (|) for lubricating fluids, or with an external bearing (A) for pumping less lubricating fluids. LEISTRITZ L3 Pumps are renowned for thelr quiet A-d aiities operation and low pulsation, ‘The close meshing of the rotor flanks and the small clearances between the rotors and the housing, guarantee good vollumettic efficiency! of the pump. The pumps also have an excellent suction capability. IIs possible to maintain a full flow discharge under poor NPSH conditions. Due to the small number of moving parts and also to the fact that the power rotor Is hardened and Ground over its total length, LEISTRITZ L3 Pumps have along service life. 2. DIRECTION OF ROTATION ‘The pump Is designed for a standard direction of rotation and therefore for a standard flow direction from inlet to outlet, ‘The normal direction of rotation of LEISTAITZ L3 Pumps Is clockwise when viewed facing the pump shaft end. The pump may not be rotated in reverse, because the hydraulic balance will no longer be, maintained. Pumps for counter clockwise operation are available as an option, 3. SHAFT SEALS Special consideration has been taken when designing and selecting the shaft seals for LEISTRITZL3 Pumps. Duo to the advantage of the hydraulic balancing principle of tho LEISTRITZ La Pumps, the shaft seals are subjected only to the inlet pressure conditions, In this way, the seals are protected against high back pressures, ‘The following types of seals are avallable: A, Radial Lip Seal- Type "W" The most economical type of seal used consists of two Radial Lip Seals (52) (Fig.1) with an intermediate filing of grease. The sealing lips are mounted baok to back, This type of seal can be recommended for operations under normal suction conditions, i.e. Infet pressures of 8 PSIA and above, and when Pumping reasonably clean fluids at pumping temperatures up to 200%. Sealing rings made of Buna-N are standard. This type of seal requires no maintenance, When mounting the radial shaft sealing rings, the soaling lips should be protected from damage by olling the shaft end and covering the keyway slot with adhesive tape. B, Mechanical Seals - Type "G* ‘The mechanical seal (62)(Fig.2) consists of a hon-rotating seat (stationary element) and a rotating sealing ring, fixed to the rotor and kept together under a light spring tension. The pumped fluid will lubricate the sliding surfaces of the seal and will return through a internal bore back into the suction chamber of the pump. In this way, the surfaces ate efficiently lubricated and frictional heat removed from the seal areas. Lis Important to ensure that the sealing faces of the mechanical seal are not allowed to run dry, particularly when starting the pump. The temperature of the fluld shall not exceed 350°F for standard seals, For higher temperatures, specialty seals are avaliable, The material ‘combinations for the rotating and the stationary elements depends on the fluid and the operating conditions, ©. Shaft Packing - Type "S* Pumps with an external bearing (A), can pump fluids which may solidify at lower temperatures. aritiao In particularly severe duties, the pump is preferably equipped with an adjustable packing (Fig.3). In order to prevent dry running of the power rotor at the packing (72), and to prevent alr from being sucked in, the drive side cover (45) is equipped with a stufting box control (79, 80, 81, 82). By means of the control screw (81) a rellef pressure of 8, PSI max. can be set to the shaft seal. Care should be taken that this control screw is never completely closed, otherwise the internal balance system will not function, 4. PRESSURE REUEF VALVE In general, all L3 pumps can be equipped with a pressure limiting safety valve to protect the plumbing, pump drive and pump from damage due to excessive pressure. The valve is a directly operated integral relief valve and has @ spring loaded poppet, which reacts to the pressure difference over the valve seat (217). if the pressure increases to an amount in excess of which has been set by the spring tension, the Poppet (219) is lifted out of the valve seat and the fluid is allowed to flow from the pressure side ‘of the pump to the suction side. The permissible relief pressure can be adjusted, over @ small span, by setting the spring tension with the set screw (222) IF the viscosity of the fluld at start up is substantially higher than during normal operation, the valve on Models SMG and L8MC can be equipped with @ By-Pass hand-whee! which allows the set pressure to be temporarily reduced to prevent the drive motor from being overloaded When the pump Is started, the By-Pass hand- wheel Is turned In clockwise direction, which lifts the poppet (219) from the seat (217). Without interfering with the normal pre-set spring tension, €@ part of the fluid flow is by-passed back into the suction chamber of the pump. The By Pass hand- wheel can then be turned to its normal position when the operating temperature and the normal viscosity have been reached. The integral pressure relief valve is a safety valve only and should not be ed as a system pressure Fegulating or contro! valve. 5. OPERATION AND MOUNTING All L3 pumps are designed for direct drive via a flexible coupling. It is also possible to directly ‘connect the drive shaft of the pump directly to a powor take off, Contact LEISTRITZ for permissible radial shaft load information. ‘The pumps may run at 4000 RPM depending upon the operating conditions, inet requirements, pressure and viscosity of the fluid, and the size of the pump. In general, high speeds can be used for smaller pumps and low viscosities whereas lower speeds are selected for larger pumps and higher viscosities (consult Data Tables) 6. DRIVE REQUIREMENTS The shaft coupling should be bored and installed so that it can be perfectly aligned, When mounting, care should be taken to ensure that the two coupling halves are aligned. They should have an axial clearance of between 1/8" and 1/4" depending upon the size of the coupling, ‘The required torque on the pump shaft is directly proportional to the discharge pressure, or the back pressure from the system. When starting the pump against full back pressure, the drive motor must be able to deliver full torque right from the start. The drive motor must be sized large enough to handle the toughest conditions, e.g. when the pump is required to operate at maximum pressure with the highest viscosity ariiroo For pumps with electric motor drives, which are continuously run with varying pressure and viscosity, it is recommended to up-size the motor power by 15% to 20% over the BHP values of the Data Tables. For intermittent operation, the motor may be sized to meet the actual requirements of the pump. 7. INSTALLATION ADVICE LEISTRITZ L3 Pumps are designed with two ‘mounting options, namely, as free installed pumps. for connection to inlet and discharge lines or as vertical tank mounted pumps, The various models and sizes available permit the most suitable and economical pump selection for each individual application, Non-standard designs are available to meet installations with existing pipe work or foundations. Infot and discharge lines shall be mounted in such ‘a way that no excessive pipe load is transferred to the pump. This is especially important when alternately hot and cold fluids are to be pumped (longitudinal expansion). The steel base of the the unit shall be sturdy and designed to avold all ‘mechanical stresses, allowing no mis-alignment between the pump and drive during operation. When heavy olls and other viscous flulds are pumped, the piping must be appropriately sized. High viscosities cause large frictional losses in pipes, which in tur may effect the running of the ‘complete system. If the pipe size of the suction line is selected too ‘small to suit the capacity of the pump, cavitation will occur, For every type of pump a required inlet pressure is stated (in PSIA), dependent upon the pump shead and fluid viscosity. If the available inlet Pressure Is too low cavitation will take place. As a result, the capacity will be reduced, vibrations will odcur and @ loud noise will be heard from the | ump, which can cause damage. In order to Prevent pump cavitation, it is recommended that ‘care should be taken when planning the piping layout, and that the pressure drop in the suction line be monitored. When designirig the piping layout, it is a good Tule to ensure that the flow to the pump is not restricted by sharp bends, right-angled valves. and check valves, etc. Cross-sectional area variations of the pipes should be carried out as smoothly as possible and sudden changes in flow direction should be avoided. Ifa fluid has solidified in the pump, the pump should not be started. Such a starting attempt will result In high, uncontrollable starting forces: which can cause damage to the bearings and bearing surfaces. When deating with flulds which tend to solidify at low temperatures, the pump must be pre-heated before starting. Jacket heating is available with L8 Pumps, whereby steam, hot water, thermal oil or electrical heating arities can be used. The heating: jacket Is designed for a maximum pressure of the ‘heating media (e.g. steam, hot water) of 220 PSlat a maximum temperature of 400°F for cast tron casings, and 680° for ductile iron and steel casings. Additionally, the pump can be provided with a low pressure steam quench. The steam quench pressure should be limited to 15 psi. All piping, pockets and valves should be carefully cleaned before the pump Is installed in order to remove welding slag, Le. screws and nuts, etc. (e.g. by flushing). Dus to the close tolerances between the rotors, liners and the balance pistons, care should be taken to ensure that the fluid contains no forelgn matter. This is especially important for pumps equipped with internal beatings. We recommend that suction strainers with the following mesh sizes be used: + 150 mesh (100 microns) for fluids with viscosity less than 150 SSU. + 30 mesh (500 microns) for fluids in the viscosity range between 150 and 700 SSU. = 1/8 inch perforations above 700 SSU Leistrit= L3 Seal Cross Sections an 82 7 80 Fig.d - Type "S" Shaft Seal for Pumps with External Bearing AS Leistritz Operating and Maintenance Instructions for LEISTRITZ Screw Pumps Series L3 1, INTRODUCTION LEISTRITZ Series of L3 Pumps, with Models LANG, LMF, LSHF, L8MG, LSHG, LMC and LHC, are selt- priming, positive displacement rotary screw pumps used for pumping oils or other lubricating fluids. The LONG, LSMF and L3HF pumps have an integral liner and casing while the L8MG, L3HG, L3MC and L3HC ate cartridge type units with separate liners and casings The maximum operating temperature should not exceed 210°F for models with intemal ball bearing (1), of 600"F for modsts with external ball bearing (A), in the viscosity range of 83 to 10,000. SSU. For pumps with steam jacket heating, the maximum, steam temperature is 400°F for models with cast Iron housings and 680°F for models with ductile iron or stee! housings. For pumps equipped with heating jackets the maximum steam pressure Is 220 psi . If the pump is provided with a steam quench for the mechanical seal, the steam pressure should be limited to 15 psi. For sectional views of the individual pump Models, see separate catalog section. WARNING Prior to starting the pump, the operator must read all product literature and familiarize himself as much as possible with the product, In no case should the system be operated without the pump/motor coupling guard in place, In no case should the pump be operated if signs of leakage or abnormal noise/ vibrations are evident. if such signs Fea Britsos appear during operation, the pump should bo stopped immediately. 2. DESIGN Rotor 3 Pumps have three rotors that mesh together and are hydraulically balanced. The threaded profiles of the rotors form tight cavities together with the surrounding housing, transporting the fluid axially as the rotors run in the liner. The rotors are normally made of nitrided steel, hardened to approx. 60 - 65 He with a nitration depth of approx. 0.5 mm and finish ground. The idler rotors may also be made of, cast Iron, Liner of Models LNG, L3MF and LHF The rotor liner is integral to the pump casing. The suction chamber of the L8MF, which rotates in 90 degree Increments, can have different inlet connections, depending on pump size. The LING has ANSI flange connections. On the drive side the pumps have an end cover which also serves as the mounting face, Liner of Models L9MG, L3HG, L8MC and LaHC The separate rotor liner together with the rotors and end cover, form a cartridge unit which can be bi into vatious types of cast or fabricated casings. Direction of Rotation ‘The direction of rotation is normally clockwise when viewed facing the shaft end. Pumps for counter- clockwise rotation are available as an option. Direction of Flow For modsis LOMF, LHF, LMC and L3HC,'the flow direction is from the suction end towards the shaft end. For models LNG, L8MG and LSHG, which have an in- fine configuration, the flow direction is from right to loft when viewed facing the shaft end, Special designs aro available with reverse flow direction, Shaft Seals Various shatt seals can be installed in the pumps. ‘Special importance is put on the selection and design of the shaft seals. Since the seal chamber is odnnected to the suction side of the pump, the shaft seals of LEISTRITZL8 Pumps are only subjected to the Inlet pressure of the pump. This allows the use of lip seals and unbalanced mechanical seals throughout the L3 product range. Balanced mechanical seals are also available for Inlet pressures over 150 PSI, The following types of seals are available: A, Racial Lip Seals - Type ‘The simplest type of seal the pump can have consists of Buna-N double lip seals (52) with an intermediate filling of grease. The sealing rings are mounted back to back. : This type of seal is recommended for inlet pressures above 8 and below 25 PSIA. Between 200°F and 20°F, the rings are made of Viton. Totlon is also available for higher temperatures. For special operating conditions other lip seal atrangements are available, e.g. withi supporting fings. The space between the sealing rings is filed with grease. The grease filing is sufficient for the expected service life of the tip seal. B, Mochanical Seals - Type *@*: Various types of mechanical seals can be installed. ‘The mechanical seal (62) consists of a non-rotating seat (stationary element) and a rotating seal, Kept together under.a slight spring tension. ‘The pumped fluid cools and lubricates the faces of the seal and is recirculated back to the suction chamber of the pump via the internal ‘bore. ' In this! way, an efficient’ lubrication of the sliding surfaces is achieved, as well ‘as a good transfer of the frictional heat. ‘The pumps may provided with a steam quench connection for the machanical seal, Steam pressure should be limited to 15 psi. Care should be taken to ensure that the pump is filled with fluid and properly vented when started, Material combinations for the rotating and stationary element are selected depending on the pumped fluid and the operating conditions. When mounted vertically, insure proper venting of the seal area by using the vent screw on the drive side cover. Design and Operation of Relief Valves WARNING Pumps must be equipped with a pressure relief valve mounted in or on the pump, or separate in the discharge line, There should be no shut off valves between the pump and the relief valve. If the pressure increases above the set value, the poppet (219) is lifted from the valve seat (217) and the fluid will pass Into the suction chamber of the pump. The set pressure is kept by means of the valve spring (235), and the spring tension is set by the adjusting screw (222). Tuming the adjusting screw clockwise will increase the set pressure. For relief valves mounted to pumps with casings, the valve can also have a by-pass handwheel. By manually turning the handwheel (227) when starting, up to 25% of the fluid can be diverted back Into the suction chamber. This manual bypass does F-2 Bitises ot change the normal set pressure of the valve. The pump should not be ellowed to run with the relief valve blocked shut, as this will offset its safety function. ‘This can lead to severe damage of the pump, piping and drive. If required, the rellef valve can be equipped with the return direct to the tank, instead of to the suction chamber. WARNING * The pressure relief valve is a safety valve and should not be used as a pressure control valve, 3, MOUNTING THE PUMP UNIT When mounting the pump to the drive, necessary care should be taken to ensure good alignment. The bedplate should be firmly bolted to the foundation before checking alignment. The alignment should be techecked prior to start-up and after the pump comes up in temperature. 38.1 Proceed according the following. ) Check the angularity of the shaft coupling: ‘Check the distance between the facing surfaces of the coupling halves with an indicator while slowly rotating the shaft. Adjust the halves as necessary. b) Check the parallelism in the shaft coupling: With a steel ruler bridged between the outer diameters of the two coupling halves, chock the alignment at four evenly distributed points. Shim as necessary to obtain acceptable parallelism. In addition, the instructions of the coupling manufacturer should always be consulted for alignment recommendations. Acceptable alignment is reached when angularity and parallelism are within 0.008”. arii69o 8,2 The baseplate, pump and drive should be relieved from all mechanical stresses when the alignment 's checked. 3,3 Before the pump is connected to the system, alt lines, strainers’ and valves should be cleaned and flushed. Solid residues may damage internat parts when passing through the pump. 3.4 Inlet and discharge piping should be mounted without stresses to the pump nozzles, and the load on the pump must be unaffected by the thermal expansion of the piping. Care should be taken to insure that the pump is turning in the correct direction (direction of arrow). The LOMC and LSHG are designed for nozzle loads per API 676. 8.8 After assembling, the shaft should be tumed by hand and checked that it can rotate freely. 8.6 Pressure and suction gauges should be installed to insure safe pump operation, 3.7 Check that the coupling guard Is in place. WARNING DO NOT START WITHOUT THE COUPLING GUARD IN PLACE! 3.8 The above procedure Is also applicable to pumps mounted to a motor via a bell-housing (horizontal face mounting and vertical mounting), except that the alignment is built into the bell-housing and normally does not need to be adjusted. 3.9 For pumps in hot service (above 200°F), the alignment must be rechecked after the pump ‘comes up to operating temperature. 4. HYDROSTATIC TEST Isolate the pump if the system is subject to hydrostatic test, as the seal is only designed for inlet pressure. 5. STARTING-UP 5.1 Before the pump fs started for the first timo, it must be filled with fluid. This can be done by F-3 opening the {solation valves and turning the pump by hand, The pump should be protected from any welding debris and dirt by placing a temporary startup strainer in the suction pipe. 5.2 Check the direction oF rotation of the drive motor to verify that it is the same as the pump by briefly bumping the motor. The proper rotation is given by the pump rotation arrow. 5.3 Observe the pump visually for signs of anything that appears to be abnormal. Cheok for leaks. 5.4 All valves should be fully opened. Insure that any feed pumps are operational and providing the proper feed rates. 5.5 The discharge line should be provided with a venting device and be vented at its highest point. When no more air is present, the fluid will ‘start to flow out of the vents, Once this occurs the vents should be closed. 5.6 Pumps in high pressure Servioo should bo started in bypass mode to avoid motor over load. The discharge pressure at startup should be in the range of 00 to 500 PS, : followed! and that the fluid does not contain 5.11 Ian integral pressure re patt of the flow back to the suction header or tank. valve is installed, tho opening pressure can be adjusted within a limited span, by turning the adjusting screw (222), ur i reset ctor he inal adjuste necessary. ress 5.12 When shutting down the pump, any inlet feed pumps should be shut down at the same time. ‘Shutting down the feed pumps first can cause the pump to run dry and damage the pump. 6. MAINTENANCE LEISTRITZ.LS Pumps require little or no maintenance, providing that the operating instructions are strictly, excessive amounts of contaminates. The degree of 5.7 Run the unit for a short period of time, Listen for abnormal noise and watch for excessive vibration. Stop the pump and recheck the alignment. Check for leaks around the flanges and seal area. Remount the coupling guard. 5.8 Restart the pump and let It run for 10-16 minutes. Read the pressure and suction gauges and compare the values with those of the specifications in the order, Read drive motor amperage and flow If possible. 5.9 Check temperature and, if po: the fluid. 5.10 After the pump has run for a short period, all performance readings should be checked and ‘compared to the specifications. Note that a fluld with a higher viscosity than specified will result in a higher power demand, flow rate and net positive intet pressure required. Check that the required inlet pressure is available, otherwise cavitation will take place. cosity of le, ‘As @ positive displacement pump, the pump tlow rate cannot be changed by throttling the discharge. Throttling will only increase the ‘back pressure on the pump and may cause damage. In order to control flow, either the speed of the pump can be changed {it possible) or a bypass tine can be used to return Fed aritsoe cleanliness and the lubricating quality of the fluid are directly related to the service life of the pump. 6.1 The following service intervals are recommended: a) Every 500 running hours, the pump should be checked.for abnormal noises or vibrations. “The temperature should be measured at the drive side and compared to the temperature of the fluid. The difference should not exceed 75-80°F. (The temperature difference is caused by the temperature rise over the balance pistons, which fs normal). Furthermore, the temperature at the safety valve should not be higher than that of the fluid, otherwise It may Indicate a valve seat leakage, b) Every 2 to § years of operation, depending upon the degree of contaminates in the fluid, the pump should be dismantiod and all internal parts Inspected for signs of weer. It is especially important that the rolling surfaces of the rotors, faces.of the mechanical seal, and surfaces of the rotor liner are inspected for signs of scoring, Light scoring of the surfaces of the rotors and liner can be removed by means of polishing and honing, The amount of scoring indicates the degree of fluid contamination. 6.2 Residues which have accumulated in the lower” part of the pump housing should be removed whenever the pump is disassembied, 6.3 All significantly worn parts must be replaced. 7. DISMANTLING THE PUMP When dismantling a LEISTRITZ L3 Pump, the following should be observed: 7.4 Before’ dismantling the pump, close the suction and discharge valves. Disconnect and tag out the motor. 7.2 Drain the fluid by opening the drain plugs of the pump. Some L3MF models do nat have drain plugs due to the minor amount of tquid in the pump. The pipe connections can then be removed. 7.3 Disconnect the pump from the drive, and lift It from the base, Remove the half of the coupling that Is mounted to the pump rotor by means of a gear puller and remove the key (180). 7.4 LAMG, LSHG, L3MC and LSHC: Unbolt the cartridge face from the casing (1) and slide out the cartridge unit. 7.5 For pumps with internal bearing (1 designation), proceed as follows: a) Remove the mounting screws (50) and carefully remove the drive skie cover (45), complete with the gasket (46) and the stationary seat of the mechanical seal (or the lip seals). Bittise @) Place the spring (235) onto the poppet (219) with the front end against the pressure side guide, ) Turn the spring plate (220) on the adjustment screw (222) as far as the shoulder. Oil the shaft of the adjustment screw (222) and thread the shatt into the hole of the cover (209). f) Install the cover (209) complete with adjustment screw (222) and gasket (210) in the housing (200). First, secure with the two long socket head screws, positioned opposite one another. ‘These should be alternately tightened until they are locked. Now screw the two screws (211) evenly in. Finally, remove the two long socket head screws and replace them with the two remaining screws (211). g) Install the housing (200) together with the gasket (26) onto the pump housing (1) with the mounting screws (27). 10.2 Re-setting the rellef pressure: An exact setting of the relief pressure is accurate only if the flow and the pressure can be measured, Otherwise, the safety valve must be returned to the factory for adjustment However, if during dismantling (see 9.2), the number of turns which were required to relleve the valve spring pressure were noted, then the religf pressure can be set with a similar number of turns in a clockwise direction with the adjustment screw (222). After adjusting, lock in position with the lock nut (281). (This method should not be used when a replacement spring has been filled, due to the different spring characteristics). 11. DISMANTLING INTEGRAL RELIEF VALVE ‘The valves should only be disassembled if necessary. 11.1 LOMF: @) Loosen the lock nut (281). By turning the adjustment screw (222), counter-clockwise as far as possible the valve spring (235) will be partly relieved. (NOTE THE NUMBER OF TURNS!) b) Open threaded valve head (209) carefully, as it is under spring load, and take out spring plate F-7 (220), spring (235) and poppet (219). 11.2 LENG: a) Remove end cover (80) with adjusting screw (222) and Jocknut (281) in place. Remove spring Plate (220), spring (235) and poppet (219). 12. ASSEMBLING INTEGRAL RELIEF VALVE 7 412.1 LEMF: a) Assemble poppet (219), spring (285) and spring plato (220) and slido them on to stem of agjustment screw (222). Sorew in valve head (209) under spring load. ») Readjust the valve spring by turning the adjustment screw (222) the noted turns Clockwise and lock it with the look nut (201). 12.2 LENG: Assemble poppet (219), spring (285) and spring plate (220) and place the assembly into casing. Reinstall end cover (30). 13.
