5 Ways to Store Curry Leaves (Kadi Patta)

WION Desk

Curry leaves also known as kadi patta, are widely used in Indian cuisine to add flavour and aroma to various dishes. Storing them properly is essential to retain their freshness and flavour. Here are five ways to store curry leaves:

Refrigeration in a Plastic Bag

Place the curry leaves in a clean, dry plastic bag or airtight container. Remove as much air as possible before sealing. Store the bag or container in the refrigerator's vegetable crisper. This method helps maintain the freshness of the leaves for an extended period.

Freezing

Wash and thoroughly dry the curry leaves before placing them in a sealed plastic bag or airtight container. Alternatively, you can freeze them as individual leaves on a tray and then transfer them to a bag once frozen. The curry leaves can be directly used in cooking

Air-Drying

Air-drying is an effective way to store curry leaves for a more extended period. Spread the leaves in a single layer on a clean kitchen towel or paper towel. Keep them in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight until they are completely dry. Once dry, store them in an airtight container in a cool, dark place.

Curry Leaf Powder

Make curry leaf powder by grinding dried curry leaves into a fine powder. Store the powder in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. This powder can be used as a flavouring agent in various dishes and it has a longer shelf life compared to fresh leaves.

Remove moisture

Use a food dehydrator to remove moisture from the curry leaves. Lay them in a single layer on dehydrator trays and follow the manufacturer's instructions for drying herbs. Once dehydrated, store the leaves in an airtight container in a cool, dark place.
